Planting a Prairie! – The prairie restoration at the Town Hall Park is going very well! We are currently in the process of letting the prairie establish itself while monitoring for any perennial invasive species. This is also the time to mow the prairie, which seems counterintuitive, but is quite beneficial to a developing prairie. Most of the prairie plants are working on setting their extremely long root system right now, so mowing over them is just fine, and will cut down on annual weeds and provide more sunlight for emerging native plants.
In the coming years, don’t be surprised to see the prairie suddenly mowed or burnt down! These methods are extremely beneficial to reduce invasive plants and increase plant health and diversity. Native plants can take it and will thrive beautifully afterward.
Thank you for your patience with this process!
